Cosmetic dentistry procedures
Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dentistry procedure which can lighten the color of teeth. This procedure is safe when completed by a dentist.
Dental bonding is a technique in which a tooth-colored resin material (a durable plastic material) is applied and hardened with a special light, which ultimately “bonds” the material to the tooth to restore or improve person’s smile. Dental bonding can be an option :
- To repair decayed teeth (composite resins are used to fill cavities)
- To repair chipped or cracked teeth
- To improve the appearance of discolored teeth
- To close spaces between teeth (diastema)
- To make teeth look longer
- To change the shape of teeth
- As an alternative to amalgam fillings
Dental veneers involve a cosmetic dentistry procedure in which thin tooth-colored porcelain or composite resin facings are bonded to the front of one or more teeth. Dental veneers are more conservative than dental crowns and can be a good cosmetic dental option for patients with the following dental concerns:
- Gaps between teeth (diastema)
- Stained or discolored teeth
- Broken or chipped teeth
- Crowded teeth
- Crooked, oddly shaped or misaligned teeth
Dental implants offer patients the opportunity to replace lost or missing teeth and greatly enhance not only appearance but functionality. A dental implant is actually a replacement for the root or roots of a tooth. Like tooth roots, dental implants are secured in the jawbone and are not visible once surgically placed in the jaw. They are made of titanium, which is lightweight, strong and biocompatible, which means that it is not rejected by the body. Titanium and titanium alloys are the most widely used metals in both dental and other bone implants, such as orthopedic joint replacements. Dental implants have the highest success rate of any implanted surgical device. A ceramic crown made to match existing teeth is then attached to the securely anchored implant.
A custom-made dental crown fits over a prepared natural tooth and replaces the natural crown, which is the part of the tooth that is visible above the gums. Dental crowns not only improve the appearance of one’s smile but help maintain the jawbone’s shape and density.
Orthodontic treatment is used to improve the appearance, position, and function of crooked or abnormally arranged teeth. Orthodontic appliances are used to put gentle pressure on your teeth. In some cases, you may have to wear headgear at night as well as a brace, and you may also need to have some teeth removed as part of your treatment. With time this pressure can move your teeth into the right position.
